Growing Changes Of Passengers Leads To Expanded Programs at ILM

Date: 8/25/2014

At ILM, we are fortunate to have all types of passengers coming and going through the airport. It is an every changing effort to attempt to recognize and meet the needs of our flyers. We pride ourselves in offering a convenient and relaxing way to travel. However, when your customer base is both wide and constantly changing, your efforts to meet your customers' needs must also be wide and consistent with their needs. Over the past several months, ILM has been evaluating our customer base and exploring ways to meet its needs, even the ones our customers didn’t know they had!

Do you remember your first flight? The first time you ever flew in an airplane? Maybe you still have your “wings”? Oftentimes, new travelers experience a heightened sense of anxiety and nervousness before traveling, especially if it’s their first time flying. This precise reason is why we implemented a program called Comfort Canines at ILM. Numerous studies show that animals help reduce stress, help calm young children, and increase socialization. Our particular program focuses on relaxing travelers through the use of animals, particularly dogs. One of our regular canines is named Olive. Her job is to greet people who show an interest in meeting and petting her. Recently, Olive aided one particular family returning home with their son's remains. Olive was able to give them a little peace and calmness. The Comfort Canines program is one of many ways that we help make the travel experience comfortable and less stressful.

Another way that we’ve expanded to better serve our passengers is through the use of social media. ILM currently operates an active Facebook and Twitter profile that allow customers to share their experience in the airport, enter contests and giveaways, post pictures and keep up with behind-the-scenes happenings at ILM. While not all comments are always positive (but most are!), these avenues give us an opportunity to respond to customer service compliments or concerns in real-time. Even though we can’t always fix every issue, Facebook and Twitter help open a line of communication on how we’re doing and how we can improve. If you haven’t found us on Facebook or Twitter yet, be sure to tweet us at @ILMairport or like us on Facebook.

In congruence with our award-winning customer service, we also listened to our passengers when it came to our in-house, complimentary Wi-Fi. In the past, we’ve always offered complimentary Wi-Fi. When we implemented this service, we didn’t anticipate the strong demand that it would bring which ultimately resulted in a substandard bandwidth strength. Last month, we partnered with Atlantic Computer Services of Wilmington to complete a total overhaul of our Wi-Fi system. Now, not only do you get complimentary Wi-Fi, but you also get a connection that is fast, reliable and consistent.

As our customer base continues to grow, we acknowledge the need to grow our services. Through the implementation of these and other services, we hope that we have not only met, but exceeded your expectations of our slogan, “Relax… Enjoy the Experience. Fly ILM!” Thanks for always checking ILM when traveling and we hope to see you soon!

Tips for Summer 2014 Travel

Date: 8/2/2014

At ILM, we often see an influx of passengers during the summer months due to vacations, graduation trips and school being out, among other reasons. Whether it be a trip to see the grandkids or a trip to see the world, it’s hard to keep up with TSA’s ever-changing travel regulations. For summer 2014, we have put together a list of travel tips to make your next flight as convenient and comfortable as possible.

Many international travelers fly during the summer months. The extra requirements that come with traveling outside the United States can be overwhelming, which is why we recommend arriving for an international flight at least two hours in advance. Even though we often have short security wait times at ILM, checking in for international travel can take longer than for domestic flights. By arriving two hours before your scheduled departure, you’ll ensure that the ticketing agents have the time they need to check your documents and luggage before your flight. We’d hate for you to start your trip off on the wrong foot because of a simple oversight.

In addition, it is beneficial to review TSA’s website to see if you need to consider special circumstances before you travel. Are you a new mother? Do you need to fly with your pet? TSA often has very specific policies on traveling when you have special circumstances. All of this information can be found on their website, tsa.gov.

When packing for carry on bags, make sure to follow the 3-1-1 rule. Anything 3.4 ounces or less goes in a 1-quart sized plastic bag, and you can bring only one 1-quart bag per person. Following these simple rules before you get to the airport can save you the stress of figuring it out while you’re waiting in the security line.

If you’re a frequent traveler, it might be beneficial for you to apply for the TSA Pre-Check program. As a member, you’ll gain access to the pre-check security lane, which allows you to keep your light outerwear and shoes on as you pass through screening. In addition, you can leave your 3-1-1 bag and your laptop in your carry-on bag. It is a great benefit for our passengers who travel frequently as it significantly shortens the amount of time spent during screening. To sign up, visit the UES Enrollment Center here in Wilmington. The process could take two to three weeks, so make sure to plan ahead.

If you’re traveling this summer, I hope that these tips help alleviate any stress flying may cause you. Simple planning ahead can save you more than time when you arrive at the airport. For more travel tips, information on new flights, or ideas for vacation packages, visit flyILM.com. We hope you have a safe trip and an enjoyable summer!Enter Text Here

ILM’s Customs Facility Rated #2 by Pilots

Wilmington, NC – ILM’s Customs Facility was recently ranked among the top 5 US Customs & Border Protection Facilities by thousands of pilots on FltPlan.com.  The Pilots’ Choice Awards are conducted every year and allow pilots across the world to choose their favorites in the following categories:  Top US FBO, Top ATC Tower, Top US Customs Facility, among others.  Coming in second best to St. Lucie County International Airport in Florida, ILM’s Customs Facility was awarded #2 on the list of US Customs & Border Protection Facilities.

Completed in 2008, ILM’s Customs Facility provides a full service Federal Inspection Station (FIS) for aircraft seeking an international arrival.  Last year alone, 1,542 aircraft cleared customs at ILM.  Pilots enjoy the quick turn around times provided by ILM’s Fixed Base Operators (FBOs) as well as the option to refuel without having to taxi the plane to a seperate location, a luxury not all customs facilities can provide.

Jon Rosborough, ILM’s Airport Director, stated, “We are very proud of our Customs Facility and can see why pilots would vote it so highly in the Pilots’ Choice Awards.  The state-of-the-art facility offers pilots the comfort and convenience desired after international travel.”

With over 145,000 active, registered pilots, most of whom fly multiple weekly trips, FltPlan users are the customers who frequent the awarded FBOs and airports.  FltPlan has become the most comprehensive source for FBO information online and in the cockpit.  For a full list of awards, please visit http://bit.ly/FltPlanAwards

  • Belts may remain on.
  • Light outerwear may remain on.
  • Laptops do not need to be removed from their cases.

TSA Pre-Check Program To Launch at ILM

Date: 12/5/2013
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced that the Wilmington International Airport (ILM) will soon be a part of the Pre-Check  program.  TSA Pre-Check is an expedited screening program that allows pre-approved airline travelers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and their 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on in select screening lanes.

“As TSA continues to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach to transportation security, we are looking for more opportunities to provide the most effective security in the most efficient way possible,” TSA Administrator John S. Pistole said. “Expanding TSA Pre-Check to more locations enables many more passengers across the country to experience expedited screening.”

If a passenger is eligible for expedited screening, a TSA Pre-Check indicator will be embedded in the barcode of the boarding pass so that when scanned at the checkpoint, the passenger may be referred to a TSA Pre-Check lane.  Many participating airlines already print a TSA Pre-Check indicator directly on the boarding pass so passengers will know in advance they have been cleared for expedited screening. TSA will always incorporate random and unpredictable security measures throughout the airport. No individual will be guaranteed expedited screening.

“At ILM, we take pride in being known for our convenience and customer service,” said Jon Rosborough, Airport Director.  “By offering Pre-Check, our passengers will be able to save more time, making the traveling experience even better.  Enhancing the passenger’s airport experience is always something we strive for and we are excited to offer this program at ILM.”

TSA Pre-Check is expected to begin before the New Year with additional equipment arriving in the next two weeks.  Passengers who are flying in December should be advised to check their boarding passes for the Pre-Check indicator to see if they qualify for the expedited boarding process.  For more information on the program, please visit http://www.tsa.gov/tsa-precheck

ILM to get full-body scanners

Date: 2/3/2012

By the summer, the Wilmington International Airport should have advanced imaging technology full-body scanners.

The machines have drawn widespread scrutiny as they have been rolled out at airports nationwide. Many passengers complained the scanners would violate their privacy, and the American Civil Liberties Union called the technology a "virtual strip search."

At ILM, though, the advanced imaging technology will include new software that shows a generic outline of a person's body, said Airport Director Jon Rosborough. He likened the new images to the stick figure outlines on the outside of a bathroom door.
