ILM to get full-body scanners

By the summer, the Wilmington International Airport should have advanced imaging technology full-body scanners.

The machines have drawn widespread scrutiny as they have been rolled out at airports nationwide. Many passengers complained the scanners would violate their privacy, and the American Civil Liberties Union called the technology a "virtual strip search."

At ILM, though, the advanced imaging technology will include new software that shows a generic outline of a person's body, said Airport Director Jon Rosborough. He likened the new images to the stick figure outlines on the outside of a bathroom door.

TSA helpline caters to fliers' medical needs

The Transportation Security Administration has launched its "TSA Cares" helpline.  The agency says the toll-free number is designed to assist travelers with disabilities and medical conditions before they head to the airport.  Passengers can call the number (1-855-787-2227) prior to traveling to ask questions about screening policies, procedures and what to expect at security checkpoints.  For the complete article, click here.

Anthony Nixon talks about his shoe-shine business . . .

When Anthony Nixon dresses for work in the morning, he pays special attention to his shoes.

They have to be pristine and immaculately shined and buffed – so slick they almost look wet. And perhaps most importantly, they have to be dressy.

"If I wear sneakers," Nixon said, "I'm not going to have a good day."

As the owner of Nix-On Shine, the recently-opened shoe-shine business by the passenger boarding area at the Wilmington International Airport, Nixon, 46, knows a thing or two about podiatric presentation.

NOTICE TO SURFERS . . .

If you plan to take your surfboard on your next trip from ILM, you should be aware of the following:

ASA Delta does not accept surfboards as checked baggage on any flight out of ILM.

US Airways accepts surfboards only on certain flights.  So when booking travel with US Airways, let them know you will be checking a surfboard.

Allegiant Air accepts surfboards as checked baggage on all Allegiant flights from ILM.
