Did you know Bluethenthal Field, now Wilmington International Airport, was originally a 70 acre tract of land thick with long leaf pine trees? That the airport’s landing area consisted of two runways outlined in white sand? Or that Warren Pennington made the first landing here in 1927?Next time you are flying through ILM, or picking up a guest, make sure to check out the new panels in ILM’s historical area. (Located by check-in) The Cape Fear Museum researched and designed these new panels, which feature photographs and information about Wilmington’s fascinating aviation history!
